April has been designated as Confederate History Month in Georgia by Governor Sonny Perdue. Here in Henry County the 100th Anniversary of the erection of the Confederate Memorial Statue on the square in McDonough will be celebrated by the various groups related to Confederate History. Here in the Neighbor Newspaper will be a series of articles by the CRG/B&M Civil War Research Group pertaining to these events.
My ancestors on the Goss side of the family buried at Bethany Church were in the Civil War from Henry County.
There were over 1,000 who answered the call to duty from Henry County during the Civil War. There are many today who have ancestors who gave their all and there were many who came home. War is war and there is nothing pretty about it.
Across the landscape of Henry County are buried those who chanced death for their cause that should be remembered today. Next year is the 150th Anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War. A time long ago filled with anxious moments that have colored history with a quilt of glory and a glimpse at something unique. This nation survived where many have not.
During these articles about the Civil War you will see where men's ideas made our society more whole and eventually led to peace of mind within the hearts of many who walked those fields filled with death and destruction.
Confederate History Month is unique also with a small glimpse of the social climate of the period when people still felt honor and courtesy towards their fellow man.
It also will show the bad side of the time when man held others in shackles for making their property grow into a vast wealth for some and then they lost this wealth to a cause they could not sustain. And those in shackles would wear them no longer.
We at the CRG/B&M Civil War Research Group hope that you will enjoy and learn from these articles. Forever may the truth resound across this land and bring knowledge of who and where we came from.
I am looking forward to learning more about the "true facts" of this great history within our County. Your CRG and B&M Research Group realize that the true history of all battles etc. within Henry County should be documented as fact and as such should be upheld in the highest honor as fact.
Not only civil war and circumstances related to that history but the current and past men and woman that have dedicated their lives to serve to defend our great country. These militarians should all be recognized NOW and for generations to come. It is our history within our generation living now that should be included in the history lessons obligated to be taught to future generations.
I applaud all efforts of your reserch group on this most worthy cause.
Thank you
Thank you very much. Most of my life has been dedicated to the study of history and science. It is not hard to teach those in the public the truth about history; the question has always been do they want to hear it? History has a doorway to everyone's lives filled with so much. I truly hope all out there enjoy reading what will be presented in the weeks to come.
Doc, Thank you for reminding us that the study of history is really about people and how they lived. It is appropriate that we dedicate time to remember and reflect. And thank you for your guidance. Your hands-on expereinces with the Atlanta Historical Society and National Park Service has given Henry County (and the area) a great citizen and resource!
Keep up the good work Larry, The truth always has it's way of overcoming the untruth's regarding our history. All will come to light, believe in that, it will.
